Climate change is an existential threat to modern society. The earth is currently around 1 degree warmer than pre-industrial temperatures. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change believes that 1.5 degrees of warming will bring increases in extreme weather, disease risk, and ecosystem disruption. We are currently on track to far exceed 1.5 degrees, with all the additional dangers that brings. So, what is causing climate change, and what can we do about it?
In this talk Dr. Simon Mair, an ecological economist working in the Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity at the University of Surrey, will explore the causes of and solutions to climate change from the point of view of ecological economics and argue that ecological economics points to climate change being a crisis of capitalism.
